ISO 20022 payment status

RJCT: Rejected

Rejected: the payment will not be executed. The reason code says why. RJCT is a payment status your bank reports in a pain.002 status report (banks report it to each other in pacs.002).

What RJCT means

Rejected: the payment, the payment block or the whole file will not be executed. The reason code in StsRsnInf says why.

Where the rejection sits matters: RJCT as GrpSts rejects the whole file, as PmtInfSts one payment block, as TxSts one payment. The Payment File Viewer shows each status at its level, with every reason code explained.

Where RJCT appears

A status report answers a payment file (pain.001 or pain.008) at up to three levels: the whole message in OrgnlGrpInfAndSts/GrpSts, a payment block in OrgnlPmtInfAndSts/PmtInfSts, and one transaction in TxInfAndSts/TxSts. RJCT may be reported for the whole file (GrpSts), a payment block (PmtInfSts) or a single transaction (TxSts); the Payment File Viewer warns when a status sits at a level its ISO code list does not cover.

The transactions are matched to your file by OrgnlEndToEndId (and OrgnlInstrId), the blocks by OrgnlPmtInfId and the file by OrgnlMsgId.

What comes next, and what to do

  • What usually follows: Nothing: a rejected payment is final. To pay, send a new instruction.
  • What to do: Read the reason code, fix the cause and send a new payment with new ids (MsgId, PmtInfId, EndToEndId). A rejected file or block means none of its transactions go ahead.

The reason codes that come with a rejection are explained one by one in the ISO 20022 reason codes.

Not every bank sends every status: many report only rejections, or only a few steps of the flow. Your bank’s implementation guide lists the statuses it uses.
