Anatomy of an MT940 entry

Tags, marks and subfields, decoded.

An MT940 is plain text: numbered tags (:61:, :86:) followed by values packed without separators. The viewer splits every value out, names it and checks it.

A short MT940 primer

Twelve fields, one balance story.

An MT940 customer statement opens with a balance, lists the bookings (:61:, each optionally followed by :86:) and closes with a balance. MT942 reports the entries of the day so far; MT950 is the same layout as MT940 without :86:.

  • Commas, not points

Amounts are digits with one comma as the decimal mark: 1190,00, or 500, for a whole amount. They are never signed — the D/C mark gives the direction.

  • RC is a debit, RD a credit

C: credit; D: debit; RC: reversal of credit (a debit entry); RD: reversal of debit (a credit entry). The balance moves by the booking effect, so a reversal of a debit adds to it.

  • Statements span pages

A long statement is split over several messages: :28C: numbers the pages, each page but the last closes with :62M: and the next opens with the same amount in :60M:.

  • :86: is free text — mostly

Banks structure it by convention: German banks with ?00…?63 subfields and SEPA keywords (EREF+, SVWZ+), Dutch and SWIFT-style with /NAME/, /REMI/. The viewer reads both.

From MT940 to camt.053

Every field has a place, almost.

The converter writes one camt.053.001.08 statement per MT940 statement and one booked entry per :61:, and invents nothing the MT940 does not say. The workspace lists the notes that apply to your file and the full mapping.

The D/C mark becomes CdtDbtInd, with RvslInd for RC and RD. The :61: transaction type stays a proprietary bank transaction code: the MT codes are too coarse to map to ISO domain, family and sub-family reliably.

A structured :86: fills the counterparty (RltdPties), its bank, the remittance (RmtInf/Ustrd), the end-to-end id and the mandate id; the full text is kept in AddtlNtryInf. MT942 maps to camt.052, which the converter does not produce.

The full mapping table, every code list and the message family are in the ISO 20022 reference.

What it shows

From packed text to a readable statement.

Every view shares one selection: open an entry in the statement and “Show in raw” lands on its line, with each subfield explained in the inspector.

  1. No. 01

    Statements

Per message: account, BIC, references, statement and page numbers, every balance with intermediate pages marked, the roll-forward worked out, credits, debits and each entry with its counterparty and remittance.

  2. No. 02

    Entry detail

Open any entry for every :61: subfield, the D/C mark with its booking effect, the transaction type in words, and the :86: in full with each structured subfield named.

  3. No. 03

    camt.053 conversion

MT940 to camt.053.001.08 in one step: the notes that apply to your file, the field-by-field mapping, an XML preview, download, or open it straight in the camt viewer.

  4. No. 04

    Raw & validation

Every line with its subfields colour-coded and a field inspector; mandatory fields, lengths, decimals, dates, IBANs, the roll-forward and page chaining checked.
