What PRES means

A request to pay (pain.013) has been presented to the debtor, who has not answered yet. PRES belongs to request-to-pay flows, not to payment files: it is reported at transaction level in a pain.014, the status report that answers the pain.013.

In a request to pay the creditor asks the debtor, through the banks or a request-to-pay service provider, to make a payment; the debtor accepts or refuses, and an accepted request is followed by a credit transfer. The EPC’s SEPA Request-to-Pay (SRTP) scheme uses these messages.

Where PRES appears

A pain.014 answers a request to pay (pain.013) at up to three levels: the whole message in OrgnlGrpInfAndSts/GrpSts, a payment block in OrgnlPmtInfAndSts/PmtInfSts, and one transaction in TxInfAndSts/TxSts. PRES may be reported for a single transaction (TxSts), in pain.002.001.08 and later; the Payment File Viewer warns when a status sits at a level its ISO code list does not cover.

What comes next, and what to do

  • What usually follows: The debtor accepts, and the payment follows, or refuses.
  • What to do: Wait for the debtor’s answer; follow up with the debtor rather than the bank.

Not every bank sends every status: many report only rejections, or only a few steps of the flow. Your bank’s implementation guide lists the statuses it uses.
