ISO 20022 reason code

TECH: Technical problem

A technical problem produced an erroneous payment, so its cancellation or recall is requested. TECH is an ISO 20022 reason code used as a cancellation reason: you will see it in camt.056.

What TECH means

A technical problem produced erroneous payments, and the payer or its bank asks for them to be cancelled or recalled: a file processed twice by a faulty job, amounts from a broken export, payments created by a system fault. It is a cancellation reason only: it does not appear in status reports or returns.

Not to be confused with: TECH is a technical error; DUPL is the narrower case of a payment sent twice, and FRAD a payment caused by fraud.

A reason code always comes with a status or an action: on its own it says why, not what happened. In a status report look at the status next to it (RJCT means the payment will not be executed); on a statement the returned entry tells you the money has come back.

Where TECH appears

TECH belongs to one of the ISO 20022 reason code lists, so it can arrive in this place:

  • Cancellation reason (ExternalCancellationReason1Code): in a request to cancel or recall a payment (camt.055 from a customer, camt.056 between banks).

In a cancellation (recall) request, TECH says why the payment should be cancelled or returned:

What to do about TECH

  • If you sent the payment or the collection: Ask your bank to recall the affected payments as soon as you find them. A successful recall comes back as a return with FOCR; a refused one as an answer (camt.029) with a reason such as CUST, AGNT or NOAS.

Duplicate sending, technical problems and fraud (DUPL, TECH, FRAD) are the recall reasons of the SEPA Credit Transfer rulebook.

Your bank’s implementation guide and the scheme’s rulebook (for SEPA, the EPC rulebooks) say exactly when it may use TECH; banks do not all apply a code the same way.
